How to choose the right search keywords for both your website pages and blog articles is vital to get found on Google. It’s a question I get asked a lot when helping people with basic website optimisation. The first thing I would say is that it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s a page or a blog article the same applies. The most important thing is making sure that your content is written for your intended audience.

The first step…

I always suggest that the first step is to look at what is being searched on in Google. This will help establish your web or blog page content and help make sure it’s relevant to the visitors you want to attract. It will also help you establish an engaging page title. This is relatively easy to carry out and is shown in detail below.

The first step is to go to Google and search based on the intended content. For example, let’s pretend we’re a cake maker and want to create content based on chocolate cakes like I’ve done below – yummy.

What do you notice…

The first thing you notice is that it shows the number of results, which in this case is 1,750,000,000. That tells us that Google has a lot of content on Chocolate cake (would you expect anything less lol). It also highlights that due to the amount of content it would be very difficult to get the top spot. You also start to build up an idea of the title and description of the content – don’t worry this is covered in another article in greater detail and for now we’ll just look at the search results.

So, if we scroll down to the bottom of the page you’ll notice a little section called “Searches related to chocolate cake”. Shown in more detail below.

Chocolate Cake

This provides us with information on the most related searches linked to “Chocolate Cake”. It also gives us some keyword ideas for possible content. For example…

The second highlights “chocolate cake recipe for kids”, so why not create a blog article called “The best kids chocolate cake recipe in the World”.

The sixth one highlights “chocolate cake birthday”, so why not create a webpage optimised for “chocolate birthday cake” or a blog article title “The most indulgant chocolate birthday cake ever”.

Remember, if you are a cake maker you may not want to give your exact recipes away, but there’s no reason why you can’t give your visitors some hints and tips. It’ll help establish you as an expert in the cake making arena and help build up your business.

Turning questions into content

You may have noticed that in some searches you’ll now see “People also ask”. These are shown and based on questions people have searched linked to the search you’ve carried on Google. For example, if we now search for “chocolate cake recipes” and scroll down you’ll see another box…

This provides us with valuable information on what questions are being searched on within Google. The great thing is that this is information based on the most recent searches. It presents us with potential content ideas that we know are being searched for. This is a great thing to do especially if you’re stuck on what content to add to your website.

Keywords tools

There are also a number of keywords tools that can help you to analyse Google searches. One that I use regularly and thoroughly recommend is Uber Suggest by Neil Patel – https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/. As shown below.

The first thing you’ll need to do is set the country to where you want the search results from and then all you have to do is search on the required keywords. You’ll then be presented with a list of keywords together with the search details as shown below.

Conclusion

It’s very important to make sure that the content on your website is created for your potential visitors. Over the years I’ve worked with many businesses that have created their own websites together with its content. The biggest mistake they make is to base the content on what they think is right, which in many cases is not what their potential customer is searching for.

I hope this article helps and offers you a slightly more planned approach to creating the content of your website. There are a number of related articles listed below as well as some resources. Good luck!
