Two weeks ago, we stepped off a small plane onto the tarmac of Tefé. This remote riverside town lies deep in the Brazilian Amazon. After months of planning and a long journey from Bolivia, we were finally here. For the next 12 months, this will be home — a year filled with new experiences, challenges, and discoveries.
Where Exactly is Tefé?
Tefé sits on the banks of the River Tefé, which flows into the mighty Amazon River. The town has a population of around 60,000 people. It is surrounded by dense rainforest and can only be reached by boat or plane.
Its history dates back to the early 17th century when Portuguese missionaries founded a settlement here. Over time, it became a key hub for trade, travel, and cultural exchange in the Amazon.
Today, Tefé is also known for its connection to Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve. This protected area is home to rare wildlife, including the Amazon river dolphin and the striking uakari monkey.
Arriving in Tefé
Our arrival was unforgettable. First, the heat hit us. A constant, humid 32°C+ that wraps around you like a heavy blanket. It doesn’t fade — day or night — and it’s taken some adjusting.
We’re based in the centre of town, which has been a huge advantage. Everything we need is close by: the main market, shops, cafés, and the River Tefé itself. Being able to walk everywhere has made settling in much easier.
First Impressions
We haven’t explored much yet, but life here already feels different from anywhere we’ve lived before. The pace is slower. People seem to know one another. And the river shapes daily life in a way that’s hard to describe until you see it.
Boats come and go constantly. They bring people and supplies from smaller Amazon communities. The market has quickly become one of our favourite spots. It’s a lively, colourful place where you can buy fresh fish, tropical fruit, local crafts, and household essentials.
It’s also where we’ve had our first taste of Tefé’s hospitality. Even with our limited Portuguese, people have been warm and welcoming.
Looking Ahead
The months ahead will be about finding our rhythm here. We plan to improve our Portuguese, explore the rainforest, and take trips along the river. The Mamirauá Reserve is high on our list, along with boat journeys into more remote areas.
For now, we’re taking things one day at a time. We’re soaking in the sights and sounds of Amazon life. If these first two weeks are anything to go by, the next year will be an unforgettable adventure.
